My parents were born and raised on Hawaii. My mom is Hawaiian and my father is Filipino. Before us kids were born our parents migrated to the mainland, Cali. Making us transplanted. Luckily enough my mom and dad kept to local traditions. My mom earned her Kumu Hula and taught us kids how to be Hawaiians, minus speaking fluent Hawaiian.
So lets talk story as the Hawaiians did/do on being transplanted Hawaiians. A wise man once told me that the Polynesian migration to the mainland was just another journey to their next home away from home. Hawaiian at heart wherever you stay.

Re: moRe: moRe: Are you a transplanted Hawaiian?
Wed, September 20, 2006 - 10:56 AMEvery year. In fact they entered Kahiko Wahine this past year. We also have a yearly Heiva in Reno in the month of August. Included is a Hula competition that took place for the first time this year. Our Halau has been around for over 30 years in the Bay area. We originated in Fremont, CA and have been there ever since. Times are changing as us kids are growing older. I hope to get back to roots and continue on our traditions. Soon come.

Re: Are you a transplanted Hawaiian?
Mon, December 11, 2006 - 3:49 PMYes, I partially am. My mother as well as her side of the family once lived in Hawaii. My mother met my father on the Mainland. I still consider myself a transplanted Hawaiian since Hawaiian culture is all I honestly know. As a fellow Filipina, I don't know much about being one. My parents have taught me Hawaiian culture and I used to be able to speak some Hawaiian as a child. A lot of it had been lost once I stopped taking hula.

Re: Are you a transplanted Hawaiian?
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 1:26 AMI cannot believe this but it's been a quick 6 years since I've been "transplanted" from 'O'ahu. I still consider Hawai'i my home and am still dancing. It feels like something is missing from my life without hula. Good for you for keeping it up.
Aloha
